How to get a better score in the IELTS

UNDERSTAND THE FORMAT

Understanding the exam format is essential for a better band score.

To become familiar with the exam format, review the exam content as well as the question and task categories for each part. It’s also crucial to familiarize yourself with the IELTS rules and regulations.

The exam consists of 4 parts: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking and there are two types of IELTS: Academic and General. The Listening and Speaking tests are the same for both but the Reading and Writing sections are different.

The Listening, Reading and Writing tests are all conducted continuously on the same day. The Speaking on the other hand may be completed a week before or after the other tests.

Know How the Test is Marked

Knowing exactly what the examiners want and offering it to them is the quickest and most effective way to improve your score. Most of what we teach at NIEC is based on this principle.

But just knowing this is not enough to get a high score. Along with this, you have to improve your level of English.

Improve Your English

Because IELTS is primarily an English language examination, the stronger your English proficiency is, the better your score should be. If your command of the English language is insufficient, simply studying IELTS skills and taking practice exams will not be enough. Unfortunately, this is the preparation that most probably will take the most time but the good news is that it is not a difficult task.

How to improve? The only way is to immerse yourself in the language. Speak in English as much as possible. Listen to English as much as you can. One of the easiest and the most convenient ways is to listen to the BBC radio on the FM. Almost all mobiles have an FM application so all you need to do is to tune in to 103 on the FM app and simply listen.

Apart from listening you have to read as much as possible. Make a habit or goal of reading at least one article (of your choice) a day. You can slowly increase the length of time you dedicate to this practice.

Get Your Speaking and Writing Assessed

In order to improve your score, you need to focus on your weakness and try to overcome it. If you keep speaking and writing without someone letting you know what mistakes you’re making then all that practice will be a waste of time. The best way is to get yourself assessed by an experienced IELTS teacher as they will be able to tell you what you have to focus on in order to get better.

Join an IELTS Preparation Course

You can find as much information as you want on the internet regarding IELTS. The problem is that there is too much information. To get a higher score, join our IELTS preparation course where you will be given the correct information. You will be told what to focus on and more importantly you will be taught in a systematic method so it is more effective. Joining a course will also put you in a right frame of mind and help you focus on getting better.

Practice Sample Question Papers

By speaking, listening, reading and writing English you prepare yourself for the IELTS exam. But you also need to know if you’re getting any better or not. For this you need to practice with sample questions. By doing this you get to assess how well you are doing. You also get to find out your weakness so you can put more focus of it most importantly practice tests will also help you learn how to manage your time.
