Overview

GMAT

The Graduate Management Admission Test, or GMAT, is an important part of the business school application process. The GMAT is a multiple-choice, computer-based and computer-adaptive standardized exam that is often required for admission to graduate business programs (MBA) globally.

The GMAT is developed and administered by testmaker GMAC to provide business schools with common measures of applicants’ preparedness for graduate-level academic work. Business school admission committees look at your GMAT score, along with work experience, academic record, and supporting materials, to assess your readiness for the rigors of an MBA program.

What’s the takeaway? A high score on the GMAT will have a direct, positive impact on your business school application. Visit NIEC, One of the Best GMAT Classes in Kathmandu.

About the GMAT

What is on the GMAT?

The GMAT exam measures your command of basic arithmetic, algebra, geometry, multi-source data analysis, and grammar. More importantly, it measures your ability to analyze and evaluate written material, think critically, and solve problems. The GMAT is first and foremost a test of your critical thinking skills. Knowing how to reason through and analyze information is the key to a great GMAT score.

What are the GMAT Sections?

The GMAT Exam – Focus Edition is comprised of three sections that showcase the specific skills needed to succeed in a graduate management program:

Quantitative Reasoning

Verbal Reasoning

Data Insights

Overview

The GMAT Exam – Focus Edition is 2 hours and 15 minutes long (with one optional 10-minute break) and consists of 64 questions in total:

Quantitative Reasoning: 21 questions, 45 minutes

Verbal Reasoning: 23 questions, 45 minutes

Data Insights: 20 questions, 45 minutes

Exam Features

The GMAT Exam – Focus Edition gives you control of your testing experience with test taker-friendly features and flexible score sending options.

Question Review & Edit

The Question Review & Edit tool gives you more control over the answers to your questions by allowing you to edit responses later in each section. With this tool, you can spend less time on questions you’re unsure about, knowing you can go back to these responses and update them. Here is how it works:

  • As you move through a section, you can bookmark questions that you would like to review later.
  • When you have answered all questions in a section, you will proceed to the Question Review & Edit screen for that section. Note: If there is no time remaining in the section, you will NOT proceed to the Question Review & Edit screen and you will automatically be moved to your optional break screen or the next section (if you have already taken your optional break).
  • Each Question Review & Edit screen includes a numbered list of the questions in that section and indicates the questions you bookmarked.
  • Clicking a question number will take you to that specific question.
  • You can review as many questions as you would like and can edit up to three (3) answers.

Select Section Order

You can answer the three sections in any order, giving you a more personalized testing experience. You can also take your optional 10-minute break whenever you choose: after the first section, or after the second. This means you can adapt the exam to exactly how you’ve prepared for it, giving you more opportunities to perform at your best. Visit NIEC, One of the Best GMAT Classes in Kathmandu.

CRITICAL REASONING

Critical Reasoning questions test the skills involved in making and evaluating arguments, as well as formulating a plan of action. You will be presented with a short argument or a series of statements and a question relating to it. Succeeding on Critical Reasoning questions requires understanding the structure of arguments and rigorous logical analysis of the connections between evidence and conclusions.

Reading Comprehension

These questions test your critical reading skills, more specifically, your ability to summarize the main idea, differentiate between ideas stated specifically and those implied by the author, make inferences based on information in a text, analyze the logical structure of a passage, and deduce the author's tone and attitude about a topic. You will be presented with an academic reading passage on a topic related to business, social science, biological science, or physical science and asked 3–4 questions about that text.

Quantitative in detail

The Data Insights section is not an adjunct; it is an integral part of the exam. The inclusion of this section in GMAT Focus reflects the increasing importance of data literacy and analytics in the business world. This section has equal weightage in the total GMAT score.

Data Sufficiency questions assess the ability to determine whether the given data is sufficient to solve a particular problem. Test takers must evaluate the information provided and decide if it is enough to arrive at a definitive answer.

Quantitative

The GMAT Quantitative section is designed to test your content and analytical knowledge of basic math concepts, including arithmetic and number properties, algebra, and geometry. The section consists of two question types:

Data Sufficiency

Data Sufficiency questions consist of a question and two statements of data. Your task is to determine whether the statements provide sufficient data to answer the question. This question type requires you to quickly identify what information you would need to solve the problem and to efficiently eliminate answer choices.

Problem Solving

Problem Solving is a classic standardized test question type. You’ll be presented with a question and five possible answer choices. Problem Solving questions use high school–level math up to algebra and plane geometry to test your critical thinking skills.

Verbal

The GMAT Verbal section is designed to test your command of standard written English, your skill in analyzing arguments, and your ability to read critically. You will see three question types in this section:

Critical Reasoning

Critical Reasoning questions test the skills involved in making and evaluating arguments, as well as formulating a plan of action. You will be presented with a short argument or a series of statements and a question relating to it. Succeeding on Critical Reasoning questions requires understanding the structure of arguments and rigorous logical analysis of the connections between evidence and conclusions.

The Question types here are:

a) Assumption/ Strengthener

You will be asked, of the five option choices provides which positively impacts the conclusion

AHTL CEO: “If the Marketing Manager of Apogee Inc., a clothing company, can be attracted to work for Arkansas Heavy Tools Limited, we will improve our market position greatly and increase our profits notably.

Which of the following is an assumption made in the passage above?

  • The Marketing Manager of Apogee Inc. has an excellent record in the clothing sector.
  • The Marketing Manager of Apogee Inc. will increase our market share and make us earn more money
  • The Marketing manager of Apogee Inc. has an excellent understanding of the Heavy Tools sector and can lend his expertise to companies in this sector with success.
  • Heavy Tools is a sector in recession and no amount of infusion of talent will get this sector, and companies in this sector, out of the recession.
  • The current Marketing Manager of Arkansas Heavy Tools Limited is contemplating a move to Apogee Inc.

b)Objection/weakener

The exact opposite of the previous question type.

Installing CCTV cameras in every corner of ‘ShopWell’ Supermarket will decrease the incident of shoplifting. In addition, the number of security guards should be increased from 12 to 18. This will ensure that shoplifting decreases significantly and consequently, our profits increase.

Which of the following, if true, most seriously weakens the argument above?

  • Only a small percentage of the shoppers at this supermarket actually indulge in shoplifting while they are at ‘ShopWell’.
  • The cameras will be free from defects and will work at an optimum level.
  • Surveillance of the camera images may not be constant, leading to some shoplifters escaping even though they have been captured on camera.
  • This supermarket attracts only middle aged and retired shoppers.
  • Increasing the number of guards by one and a half times will be effective in decreasing shoplifting.

c) Inference

An inference is a mini- conclusion , something that is not explicitly/clearly mentioned in the argument but, can be derived from the evidences provided.

Rural households have more purchasing power than do urban or suburban households at the same income level, since some of the income urban and suburban households use for food and shelter can be used by rural households for other needs.

Which of the following inferences is best supported by the statement made above?

  • The average rural household includes more people than does the average urban or suburban household.
  • Rural households Have lower food and housing costs than do either urban or suburban households.
  • Suburban households generally have more purchasing power than do either rural or urban households.
  • The median income of urban and suburban household is generally higher than that of rural households.

All three types of households spend more of their income on food and housing than on all other purchases combined

d) Passage Completion

There will be evidences, claims and a portion will be left blank. Our job is to choose an option that logically fills the blank.

Which of the following best completes the passage below?

When a project is failing and should be terminated, plan to bring in a new manager. New managers are more likely to terminate the project than are the original managers because______

  • the project may have failed for reasons that the original manager could not have foreseen
  • organizations tend to reward managers who can overcome problems
  • managerial decisions to terminate a project should depend on the likelihood of the project’s eventual success
  • the original managers were not necessarily able to overcome problems caused by external events over which they had no control
  • the new managers have no need to justify the earlier decision to maintain the project

e) Bold face question

Here one or more sentences will be in bold and the question will ask us to identify the purpose that those sentences serve in the provided argument.

The survival of the publishing industry depends upon the existence of a public who will buy the printed word in the form of newspapers, books and magazines. Over the past several years, however, the advance of electronic media, particularly CD-ROMs, online computer services, and the Internet, has made information available to the public electronically without the need for printed materials. As the availability of electronic media increases and as it is more easily accessible, the public has less need for printed materials. So the publishing industry is threatened by the advance of the computer information age.

The two portions in boldface play which of the following roles?

  • The first is the part of evidence that the argument includes, the second is the conclusion that can be drawn only from the first.
  • The first is the second-premise that the argument includes; the second is the conclusion that is reasonably drawn from this passage.
  • The first is the second-premise that the argument includes, the second is the inference that must be drawn from this argument.
  • The first is the fact that must be true, the second is the inference that can be correctly drawn from this argument.

Reading Comprehension

These questions test your critical reading skills, more specifically, your ability to summarize the main idea, differentiate between ideas stated specifically and those implied by the author, make inferences based on information in a text, analyze the logical structure of a passage, and deduce the author’s tone and attitude about a topic. You will be presented with an academic reading passage on a topic related to business, social science, biological science, or physical science and asked 3–4 questions about that text.

The question types in this section are:

i) Main Idea Question

Main idea questions ask you to identify the main idea or the primary purpose behind the passage that is given.

Example questions are:

In this passage, the author is primarily concerned with…?

Which of the following would be the most appropriate title for the given argument?

ii) Tone of the author Questions

Considered as a tricky question by many students, tone of the author questions ask you identify the tone of the author, or the passage. Examples include:

The author’s attitude towards contemporary cinema can be best described as…?

The passage regards the idea of modern artistic activity with…?

iii) Specific Fact Questions

These are the questions that ask you to spot information that is specifically included as a fact or truth.

Specific fact questions will often be consequential in nature. They usually look like this:

The author refers to ‘example phrase’ in line 5, primarily in order to… ?

According to the passage, the critics considered the ideas found in the novelist’s work to be… ?

iv) Implied Questions

Implied questions ask you, as a reader, to identify an idea which is suggested or implied, either directly or indirectly. For example, an implied question looks like this:

It can be inferred from the passage that, in evaluating the scientist’s theory, some of the critics were….?

The passage suggests that if the predictions of the geological department were to be true, it would be….?

v) Structural Questions

Structural questions, as the name suggests, ask you to identify the technique, or the writing style adopted by the author, in presenting facts or views. For example:

Which of the following best describes the structure of the passage?

Which of the following best describes the organization of the lines 17 through 23?

vi) Extrapolation Questions

Widely regarded as the most twisted of all Reading Comprehension questions, extrapolation questions require you to extrapolate or compare the author’s ideas to other situations, including situations that are analogous. In order to answer this type of questions, you must go beyond what is stated in the passage, draw an inference from the passage, and then match it with the situations given in the answer choices. Example questions are:

Which of the following situations is most closely analogous to the situation described by the author as an irony, in lines 11 and 12?

Which of the following describes a situation that is analogous to the situation described in the second paragraph?

vii) Negative or Exception Questions

These are the questions that ask you which of the given answer choices is not true according to the author or the passage, or which of the answer choices with which the author of the passage would not agree. Examples are:

The passage states all of the following about mitochondria, except?

The author asserts that technology has led us do all of the following miraculous experiments, except?

viii)Contextual/Definition of a term or word Questions

These are the questions that test your ability to work out the meaning of an unfamiliar word, based on context within the passage. For example:

As it is used in the passage, the term ‘convivial’ can be best described as?

The term ‘inchoate’, used by the author in line 18, refers to?

How is the GMAT Scored?

The GMAT is a Computer-Adaptive Test, or CAT. On the GMAT, the CAT actually adapts to your performance as you’re taking the test.

When you begin the GMAT, the computer assumes you have an average score and gives you a question of medium difficulty. As you answer questions correctly, the computer serves up more difficult questions and increases its estimate of your ability. And vice versa, as you answer incorrectly, the computer serves up easier questions and decreases its estimate of your ability. Your score is determined by an algorithm that calculates your ability level based not only on what you got right or wrong but also on the difficulty level of the questions you answered.

GMAC’s algorithm that determines your 200 to 800 score is often misunderstood, and there are many myths surrounding “cracking” the algorithm. The best way to “beat” the algorithm is to be prepared. However, because the adaptive nature of the test doesn’t allow for “skipping” questions, you will need to pace yourself and strike a balance between spending valuable time answering difficult questions correctly and possibly running out of time before you finished the test. There are significant penalties for leaving questions unanswered at the end of the exam.

For the Analytical Writing Assessment, your essay receives a score from one human reader and a computerized program, using a holistic 6-point scale. The Integrated Reasoning section is not adaptive, but as with the Quantitative and Verbal sections, you cannot leave questions unanswered or return to previous questions. The IR section is scored on a 1 to 8 scale.

You will receive your unofficial GMAT score immediately following the test, when you will have the option to keep or cancel your score. Visit NIEC, One of the Best GMAT Classes in Kathmandu.

What is a Good GMAT Score?

When considering your GMAT score goal, it’s always a good idea to look at the mean or average GMAT score of admitted applicants to the MBA programs you’re considering applying to. This will give you a good baseline

The Quantitative and Verbal sections of the GMAT are each scored from 0 to 60, with the mean score for Quantitative at 39 and the mean score for Verbal at 27. The score business schools and MBA programs pay the most attention to is the combined 200–800 score scale, where the mean score is 552.

You can use the tables below to see the relationship between scaled scores and the test-takers achieving them:

PercentileTotal GMAT Score*
Top 10% of all test takers710
Top 25% of all test takers650
Top 50% of all test takers580
Below 50th percentile of all test takers570

* Based on the performance of GMAT test takers between 2013 and 2015

Students admitted to the most competitive MBA programs have average scores in the 710 range, putting them in the 90th percentile or higher. If you’re considering applying to one of these programs, you’ll need to target 710 or higher on the GMAT to be a strong applicant.
