IELTS Writing Task 1 Tips for Nepali Students
Structure of writing task 1
To make a well organized report in task 1, students must:
Make an introductory paragraph
Write an overview of the diagram
Make two body paragraphs
Rules and regulations of the introductory paragraph
When a single diagram is given, introductory statement should be in simple sentence
When multiple diagrams are given, introductory statement should be combined and in compound sentence.
No matter the time period given, introductory paragraph must always be in simple present.
The introductory paragraph will include three things— Name of the topic— location of the topic—time period of the topic
The introductory paragraph always begins with ‘The’
Rules and regulations of the overview
Students must always combine the overview with the introductory paragraph.
Here, we outline the highest trend, Lowest trend or biggest/minimal change in data.
Students can also compare the highest trend with the lowest trend.
1 to 3 sentences can be written in the overview if required.
Tense of the sentence depends on the time period given in the diagram.
Students must not show numerical figures such as percentages etc.
Students can show the time period while outlining the trends.
When a single diagram is given, overview is compulsory. However, in a multiple diagram situation, if the topic is almost similar or the contents are almost similar then, overview is compulsory
In a multiple diagram, if the topic and contents are very different to each other then, overview is not needed to be written.
Using complex or compound sentence in the overview is also often mandatory.
RULES AND REGULATIONS OF THE BODY PARAGRAPHS
In both paragraphs, students must describe the main features as well as compare the data.
The first paragraph can occupy between 2 and 5 sentences while the second paragraph occupies between 2 and 3 sentences.
Students must use appropriate vocabularies such as appropriate action verbs, phrasal verbs, adjectives, adverbs, superlatives, comparatives, linking words, complex and compound sentences.
While showing the numerical data, students are instructed to use phrasal verbs to show writing skills.
Repeating operating words in both paragraphs is somewhat restricted. Therefore, students are instructed to use synonyms, change the order of the sentences while outlining the main trends and while comparing the data.
Providing examples, reasons in the body paragraph/overview/ introduction is strictly prohibited.
