The United States is one of the prime destinations for students all around the globe who are looking to pursue their higher education through a widely recognized degree from a reputable university. Almost all universities have scholarship programs, most of which are open to applications from international students – although you may need to fulfill certain criteria to be eligible for it. According to the Fulbright Commission, more than 600 American universities offer scholarships worth $20,000 or more to international students. The United States is famous for having some of the best colleges and universities in the world, and a superior higher-education system. Yet, this education comes at a high price tag anywhere else in the world. So to combat that there are plenty of scholarship opportunities for international students to grab onto. Scholarships and fellowships are a form of gift aid, which does not need to be repaid or earned. Here is an overview of the types of scholarships available for international students so you can start looking for the most suitable ones for you.

What are the types of scholarships?

You can study in the USA on fully funded or partially funded scholarships. The Government of US and several universities in the USA offer scholarships to international students and local citizens every year and we have listed here some types of scholarships available for international students.

Government-funded US scholarships for international students

  • Fulbright Foreign Student Program– The Fulbright Program is full scholarships in the USA for international students who want to pursue a Master’s or Ph.D. degree. The scholarships can also be awarded for non-degree postgraduate studies. The grant covers tuition fees, textbooks, airfare, a living stipend, and health insurance. Fulbright offers scholarships for graduate students, young professionals and artists to study in the US for one year or more.
  • Hubert Humphrey Fellowship Program– The Humphrey Fellowship Program is for experienced professionals interested in strengthening their leadership skills through a mutual exchange of knowledge and understanding about issues of common concern in the U.S. Fellows are not able to choose which university they will attend. Rather, they are assigned in diverse groups of 7-15 to the most appropriate host institution based on their area of interest and professional field.
  • American University Emerging Global Leader Scholarship for Nepalese Students The AU EGL scholarship covers all billable AU expenses (full tuition, room and board) for one international student who will need a visa (preferably an F-1 or J-1 student visa) to study in the United States. The scholarship does not cover non-billable expenses such as mandatory health insurance, books, airline tickets and miscellaneous expenses (approximately U.S. $4,000 per year).
  • The Next Gen Scholarship in USA for Nepalese Students This scholarship for higher education in the USA offers a $1,000 grant for any student who wishes to study in Maryland, Washington/Virginia, open to all international students. To qualify for this scholarship, applicants must have a minimum 3.0 GPA and be an international student or non-citizen enrolled in a US school. Applications are judged on merit and financial need.
