IELTS Writing- Task Achievement/ Task Response

The IELTS Writing is divided into two tasks: Task 1 and Task 2. As with the other three sections of the IELTS, there are four major criteria used to assess your writing. Task achievement/ response is one of the four criteria used which focuses on the degree to which the question has been answered properly.

IELTS Writing Task 1- Task Achievement

The writing task 1 band descriptor has Task Achievement as one of the four band descriptors. Task Achievement is your ability to answer the question properly where you will be required to write a clear and a well develop answer. Task 1 requires you write at least 150 words to describe a table, graph or diagram. You will be required to summarize the information and make comparisons. Successfully addressing this question type will require you to identify all the key features in the diagram, provide sufficient detail- not too much or not too little, and ensure accuracy when referring to data or describing trends and processes.

It is also required that you provide a clear overview which basically means summarizing the most significant information or trend in the diagram. It includes identifying and writing the main or key features, main trends, differences of the graph or chart. In case of process diagrams, writing an overview could mean identifying the key stages in the process: how many stages there are in the process diagram.

A common error students make is interpreting the information rather than reporting it. It is important to understand that you are required write a description deriving data from the diagram to support the information. It is not an interpretation where you will be focusing on the ‘why’ but, you should rather focus on the ‘what’.

IELTS Writing Task 2- Task Response

Task Response and Task Achievement simply are two different names used in the band descriptors for IELTS Writing. Task 2 requires you to write a short essay of at least 250 words where you will be required to present your opinion on a specific topic and even support your ideas with evidences. It is important to note that Task 2 in the writing contributes more to your overall writing band score than Task 1.

To successfully address Task 2, it is important that you respond to all parts of the essay question. It is not just enough to list down ideas but you will also be required to develop and support the ideas. You could use various examples, experiences, reasons or results to extend and support your ideas and you have to make sure that your opinion is clear because your examiner will be looking for a clear position. Candidates are suggested that they properly analyze their tasks to identify the topic and the task for the essay which can help them work on an essay plan before they begin writing their essays without going off topic.

There are various types of essay question in the Writing Task 2 and making yourself familiar with these essay types will help you have a better understanding of how to address your task. The essay question types are divided into three major categories: problem and solution, opinion and discussion.

The Problem Solution essay will require you to mention and describe the problems and suggest solutions of any well-known issue. Opinion essays will require you to present your opinion on a topic. Discussion essays will require you to describe and discuss two opposing opinions and you will also be required to pick the one you prefer. In this type of essay, it is very important that you clearly state your opinion while considering both sides of the argument.

In this case, PLANNING IS THE KEY! Students are highly recommended that they spend a few minutes at the beginning to work on an essay plan.
